Flagging tape might not be the most exciting growers supply you end up using, but it has more uses that most any other garden product out there. We have nearly two dozen different colors and designs of flagging tape so that different tape can mean different things. Here are just a few uses you’ll get out of flagging tape that will help make your nursery or orchard so much more efficient.
Delineate Rows and Spaces
If you’ve marked off where rows are supposed to go or how much ground is to be tilled, you don’t want to waste time measuring it out over and over. Measure once and put up flagging tape on posts or anchoring pins to know exactly where you’re going to plant.
Pruning Guidance
Flagging tape is used in forestry as well as nurseries to mark trees that are to be removed or pruned. Experts will come along with flagging tape to mark trees to be cut, and then workers with the saws will come along later and handle the actual cutting.
Mark Trees For Grafting
You might have taken days walking around the orchard to inspect every tree, and you finally did it: you found the one that will produce the best scions for grafting. Now don’t lose track of which one it is! Flagging tape is the perfect way to identify your preference for trees, whether to denote which ones bore the best fruit in the previous season or the ones that are on the chopping block if they don’t produce better in the coming year.
Double-up On Identification
Most nursery managers and workers have encountered the problem of misidentified plants. The placard gets kicked by someone and they don’t put it back in the right place, or the elements wash away writing. This can mess up an entire year of crop experimentation, so you have to do whatever you can to avoid it. One way to avoid this problem is to tie a piece of flagging tape to the first plant in the row, then tie another piece to the identifying placard in case they ever have to be matched up again. Back at the office, make note of which type of flagging tape was used in that row.
Keep Your Workers Safe
There will always be some dangers at nurseries. Perhaps it’s a low-hanging branch, maybe it’s a sinkhole, or maybe you’d like to tell workers to leave a plant alone because it’s had a harsh chemical recently sprayed on it. When you’re aware of a danger, flag it!
Tell Harvesters What To Harvest
You’re familiar with your grove, but the workers you bring in might only be there for a couple of weeks. If you have different species of fruit tree that bear a month apart, you’ll want to ensure that they leave the unripened fruit alone by marking certain trees with flagging tape, or use the tape to mark off an entire area of the property.
The flagging tape we offer at Frostproof is colorful and durable PVC, so it holds up to freezing temperatures and UV radiation. It will be there to properly mark trees and plants as the seasons turn.
