Benefits of Growing Your Own Food

Posted by Frostproof on 17th Oct 2016

In our previous blog we told you all about the health benefits of picking up some garden hand tools and getting to work. But getting healthier isn’t the only benefit of growing your own food. Let’s take a look at other ways gardening can make you feel great.

  • Insecticides are up to you. You know exactly what chemicals, if any, have been used on the vegetables. Why spray for hornworms when you can probably just take a look and pick them off one by one?
  • It’s as fresh as can be. Foods grown for transport are often picked early so that they can continue ripening on the truck and at the grocery. When you grow your own food, you pick it and take it directly into your house. (If it’s a cherry tomato, it probably doesn’t even make it that far!)
  • Fresher food is tastier and healthier. Once again, when you avoid long-haul transport, you’re getting food that had more time to ripen. Letting it stay on the vine until it’s completely ripe means it’s at its peak nutritional value and will taste better.
  • Save money. Easy enough...grow your own food and you don’t spend as much at the grocery. You might spend $2.00 for a squash plant or the same amount for an entire pack of seeds; either way it’s paying you back exponentially.
  • Help the environment. Reducing the amount of food you buy from the store means that it didn’t require the farmer to spray it with chemicals, harvest it with a huge combine, and then transport it across the country in a truck. All of these come together to reduce your carbon footprint.

Tending a garden is a great way to help your health, the health of the Earth, and the health of your wallet! When you’re looking for the best tools for gardening, check out what Frostproof Growers Supply has to offer!
